RATINGS & ANALYSIS – Ratings and analysis guides are the bedrock of investment research.  These guides provide scoring, background, and forecasting of investments.  Each ratings publisher has different criteria considered when rating the investment, so it may be helpful to consult their methodology (available at the front of each publication) to better inform your research.

 

NEWSLETTERS – Newsletters can either be published by large investment companies (such as Morningstar) or by individual investment professionals.  These publications can include suggested investments, advice on managing your portfolio or finances, and overviews of current events and trends that impact the financial realm.

 Investment Ratings & Analysis

Morningstar Products
 
 

  • Morningstar.com Library Edition  (online database) - Reports on 23,000+ mutual funds and 7,000+ stocks (full reports on 2,000 funds and 2,000 stocks).  Provides tools for screening securities and analyzing portfolios.  Updated throughout the day. 
  • Morningstar Mutual Funds - Updated on a rolling basis, Morningstar Mutual Funds rates over 1,500 funds.
Value Line Products 
  • Ratings & Reports - Rates over 1,700 stocks across more than 90 industries.  Includes an index to stocks at front of the book.  This product is updated on a rolling basis.
  • Selection & Opinion - A companion piece to Ratings & Reports, the Selection & Opinion offers commentary on industries, economic indicators, and model portfolios among other information.
  • Ratings & Reports Small- and Mid-Cap Edition - Covers 1,800 small- and mid-cap stocks in a similar fashion to the Ratings & Reports.
  • Fund Advisor - Rates over 18,000 load, no-load, and low-load funds.  Contains an index at front with fund performance rankings, and a supplementary issue at the back which provides overviews of 99 mutual fund families.
  • Special Situation Service - In addition to providing research on industries, sectors, and individual stocks, this title provides recommendations divided into aggressive and conservative selections.  Published on a monthly basis.

Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage  (online database)

S&P's NetAdvantage includes industry surveys, stock and bond reports, company profiles and articles.  It also provides access to the Standard & Poor's Mutual Fund Reports, Stock Reports, and Industry Reports.  Remote access (as opposed to accessing on a library computer) does not provide access to the Industry Reports due to a contractual agreement with S&P.



TheStreet.com Products (formerly Weiss Ratings) - The Library features three products from TheStreet.com, rating investment products on a quarterly publication schedule:   

  •  Guide to Bond & Money Market Funds
  •  Guide to Common Stocks
  •  Guide to Stock Mutual Funds
General Business File ASAP (online database) - This Gale database has an investment reports section, which offers thousands of up-to-date investment reports produced by financial institutions, Wall Street, and International brokerage firms, searchable by ticker symbol.  To access this, first click on the "Advanced Search" option on the left-hand column, and then select "Search investment reports by ticker symbol" at the bottom of the resulting page.    
                                                                                                                                                                

Investment Newsletters

 

   American Association of Individual Investors
In addition to providing a monthly newsletter featuring articles & advice for the individual investor, AAII has an extensive website available through the library (in library use only, ask at Reference Desk for logon) that offers further publications, tools such as their Investor Classroom, links to local chapters of AAII, and a versatile Portfolio section where you can view model portfolios, obtain advice, and construct test portfolios.

Donoghue's Money Letter
Scoring specialty funds along with domestic and international stock funds, this weekly newsletter provides investment advice and comparisons of Donoghue's suggested funds with Fidelity and Vanguard products.

Fidelity Insight
An independent report of Fidelity funds with commentary and scorecards.

Hulbert Financial Digest
This monthly newsletter, associated with MarketWatch, provides an analysis of financial newsletter performance--a great resource to consult if considering the purchase of a newsletter.

Kiplinger Letter
A weekly newsletter featuring commentary and analysis about current events that will impact the economy.

Kiplinger's Retirement Report
Offering a range of advice for managing finances during retirement, this monthly newsletter covers topics such as health insurance, taxes, investing, estate planning, and more.

Louis Rukeyser's Mutual Funds
This monthly newsletter highlights growth and income funds, alongside the Rukeyser Top 100 Low- or No-Load Funds.

Louis Rukeyser's Wall Street
Covering stocks, bonds, and funds, this monthly newsletter also features a Rukeyser Interview with a financial professional.

Morningstar Newsletters
Morningstar has a range of monthly newsletters, each offering research and recommendations in their specialized area of investment.  The library holds the following newsletters:

Standard & Poor's The Outlook

A searchable database of free profiles and financial of US companies (also has a fee-based section).

A specialized business reference and research service of the Boston Public Library.

Securities & Exchange Commission, Info on Old Stocks & Bonds
