UNATTENDED CHILDREN IN LIBRARY POLICY (APPROVED 11/19/07)
The Wellesley Free Library encourages children to use the Library. Our commitment to provide a full range of resources, services, and programs for young people is total and unwavering.
In order to ensure that all children, as well as all other patrons, have a positive experience at the Wellesley free Library, we ask children and their parents or care-givers to be aware that children are subject to the same rules and regulations s adult patrons, and my be asked to leave the Library if they do not observe these rules as well as additional rules pertinent to children only.
Responsibility
Parents and caregivers are responsible for the safety and behavior of their children when they are on library property. The Library odes not act in loco parentis. Caregivers must be older than 12 years of age.
- Children under age eight must not be left unattended on library property.
- Children older than eight should not be left in the Library for extended periods of time without specific tasks or plans for how to spend their time.
Parental Attention
When a situation (e.g. personal injury, violation of rules and regulations) develops that warrants the attention of the parent/guardian, the Library will attempt to contact that individual. If unable to reach the parent/guardian, the Library will contact the Wellesley Police Department to handle the situation.
Closing time
All patrons including children must leave the building at closing time. Under no circumstances will Library Staff transport or assume responsibility for any children. If a child's parent or care-giver cannot be located by Library Staff, the Wellesley Police will be notified and asked to take custody of the child until a parent or care-giver can be located.
