Wellesley High School Author: Harold Hutchins Kolb (1951)

         After receiving his B.A. in English from Amherst, his M.A. in American Studies from the University of Michigan, and his Ph.D. In British and American literature from Indiana University, Harold spent most of his career at the University of Virginia as Professor of English (he is still Professor Emeritus), and Director of the Center for Liberal Arts.  His books include A Writer’s Guide: The Essential Points (which has become a classic, used on hundreds of college campuses); The Illusion of Life: American Realism as a Literary Form; Mark Twain: The Gift of Humor; and Field Guide to the Study of American Literature
